Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The ex-president was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.

The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
