Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

Authorities released video stills Monday of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt according to reports.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday near MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his wife just had a child.

“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be an important component of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while healing from his surgery.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he attends every game. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
