Preparations for Putin-Trump Talks Delayed Days Following Hungarian Capital Talks Proposed

Currently exist "no arrangements" for American leader President Trump to meet Russia's Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has declared.

This past week Trump indicated he and the Russian president would hold talks in Budapest within two weeks to address the ongoing hostilities.

A initial discussion between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the White House stated the two had had a "positive" discussion and that a meeting was not "needed".

The White House withheld additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.

Earlier Events

Trump had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit over the phone with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Various sources indicated his talks with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with sources claiming Trump had pushed him to give up extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Moscow.

Yet, on Monday the American president supported a ceasefire proposal endorsed by Ukraine and European leaders to pause the hostilities on the present positions.

"Leave it as is the way it is," he remarked.

Russia has frequently resisted against pausing the current line of contact.

The Russian government was exclusively seeking "long-term, sustainable peace", Lavrov said on this week, implying that halting hostilities would only amount to a short-term truce.

Negotiating Stances

The "fundamental issues" of the war demanded attention, the Russian diplomat said, using Moscow's terminology for a series of comprehensive conditions that include the recognition of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of Ukraine – a impossible condition for Ukraine and its European partners.

Zelensky commented discussions about the current lines were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "employing all tactics" to evade negotiations.

He also said the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the provision of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with Trump last Thursday preceded rumors that the US was planning to provide long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could possibly hit Russian territory.

Zelensky said it was the weapons consideration that had forced Russia to enter into dialogue. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had emerged as a "valuable contribution" in negotiations", he remarked.
