The man behind the scheme, who devised a system to supply stealthy PEDs to top competitors featuring baseball icons Giambi and Bonds and track and field star Jones decades ago, is deceased. He was 75.

The federal government's investigation into a separate firm established by Conte, the Bay Area lab, led to the guilty verdicts of Marion Jones, elite sprint cyclist Thomas, and retired NFL player Stubblefield, along with various support personnel and professionals.

Conte's Admissions and Prison Time

Conte, who completed a third of a year in a federal facility for steroid distribution, spoke openly about his high-profile athletes. He went on television to state he had witnessed three-time Olympic medalist Jones use a syringe with human growth hormones, but never directly incriminating Barry Bonds, the San Francisco Giants slugger.

Baseball's Investigation

The federal case inspired the volume Game of Shadows. Just days following the release of the book in that year, baseball Commissioner Selig appointed former senate majority leader Mitchell to look into PED use.

He revealed he sold steroids known as certain undetectable drugs and guided their use to many elite athletes, including Giambi, a star player, the Mitchell report said.

Using PEDs is a significant danger to the fairness of the competition,” the report stated. “Widespread use by athletes of these drugs unfairly disadvantages the those who refuse to cheat who decline to take them and creates doubts about the accuracy of sporting achievements.”

Mitchell indicated the problems were not sudden. Mitchell claimed everyone involved in professional baseball in the previous twenty years – covering commissioners, management, the union and players – were partly accountable for what he labeled “the steroids era”.

How It Began

The federal investigation into the company started when a tax agent examining the company’s trash. Conte ultimately admitted guilt to a pair of the 42 charges he faced in that year before a trial. Several of the individuals found guilty were convicted for lying to the court.

The athlete's coach Anderson, pleaded guilty to drug dealing counts arising from his ties to the lab. The court gave him to 90 days in incarceration and an equal period of house arrest.

Bonds' Legal Battles

The baseball legend was charged with lying to a federal jury about receiving banned substances and faced a trial in the early 2010s. Prosecutors dropped the charges after several years when the government decided not to challenge an overturned ruling to the supreme court.

A multiple MVP winner and star performer, he ended his career after the 2007 campaign with a record home run tally, exceeding the record of 755 that Aaron achieved from his career. Bonds denied intentionally taking performance-enhancing drugs but has failed to gain entry to the Hall of Fame.

Later Years

Conte stated in an interview in a 2010 discussion that “yes, athletes cheat to triumph, but the officials and lawyers also bend the rules.” He wondered whether the conclusions in these trials were worth the resources.

Following his prison term, he got back in business in that year by resuscitating a health products venture he had founded two decades earlier called SNAC System. He located it in the very same place that once housed Balco in Burlingame, California.

Unapologetic Views

Conte remained defiant about his central role in distributing custom PEDs to professional competitors. He claimed he simply helped “even the competition” in a world full of rule-breakers.

Critical Perspectives

To an expert, a then-member of the WADA, Conte may as well have been distributing illegal narcotics. “This involves blatant drug dealing. You are talking about using drugs in defiance of legal codes,” Wadler said in that period. “It's not a good deed and this is not some do-gooding. It's trafficking.”
