New research suggests that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using these medications should be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to original mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
