🔗 Share this article Vehicle Evading Police Smashes into Florida Nightspot, Claiming Four Deceased and Eleven Injured A speeding car that was fleeing police crashed into a busy nightspot in the early hours on Saturday, claiming the lives of 4 people and wounding 11 in a vintage neighborhood of Florida, known for its entertainment scene and visitors. Aerial surveillance team with the Tampa law enforcement agency spotted the car operating dangerously on a highway at approximately 12.40am after police said the light-colored car had been seen illegally racing in another neighborhood, as per a police department announcement. The Florida road police caught up with the vehicle and attempted to perform a tactic that involves bumping a back fender of a fleeing car to cause it to lose control, called a precision immobilization technique, but it was unsuccessful. Highway patrol officers “ended pursuit” as the car sped toward the vintage downtown area near the city center, local police reported. Eventually, the driver failed to maintain control of the car and struck over a dozen individuals near the bar, officials confirmed. 3 victims died at the scene and a fourth victim died at a medical facility. By the next day, a fifth casualty was hospitalized in critical condition, and 8 additional patients were being treated at area medical centers but were classified as not critical, authorities stated. Two other victims experienced slight harm and declined medical aid at the site. All 15 victims are adults. “The incident today was a senseless disaster, we are with the loved ones of the victims and everyone who were affected,” the local top law enforcement officer said in a statement. Authorities identified the suspect as 22-year-old Silas Sampson, who was arrested on the weekend and is being held at the local jail. Legal records indicated the suspect has been charged with four counts of vehicular homicide and four charges of aggravated fleeing or eluding with serious bodily injury or fatality. Each are first-degree felonies. No attorney was listed for Sampson. “Our entire city feels the tragedy,” said Tampa’s mayor, who also served as Tampa’s initial woman top cop, in a message on social media. “Our condolences are with the victims and families. Official inquiries into this crash is ongoing, and we are working to obtain explanations,” she wrote. Lately, certain regions and municipal authorities have advocated to restrict the employment of rapid vehicle pursuits to protect both the public and officers. Following a rise in deaths, a recent report funded by the US justice department recommended law enforcement pursuits to be rarely used, noting that the risk to individuals, personnel and bystanders often exceeds the immediate requirement to take someone into custody. However, the state has intensified efforts on the methods, with the state’s road police revising its guidelines to loosen restrictions on the use of car chases and pit maneuvers. The federally supported report characterized these strategies as “high-risk” and “debated”.
